We are now massively used to working from home. But between all the Zoom meetings, remote VPN connections and homeschooling, the network can quickly become overloaded. A fast internet connection is now more essential than ever – luckily there are plenty of tips and tricks to ensure that.

Is 5G for you?

By using the 5G network – the successor to 4G – you have access to an increasingly faster internet connection, more options and ultimately a better network experience. It is also called the mentioned and for good reasons. The main reasons are that the network speeds up mobile internet to 20,000 megabits per second and increases the capacity of the network. The latter is because more and higher frequencies are used. That means: better coverage and less tax. To take advantage of this you need the right smartphone (one with a built-in 5G moden) and access to the network. Various subscriptions are already available in 2021 and the national coverage makes this an accessible option for many people.

Slow internet, or slow WiFi?

What is the difference between internet and wifi? In principle, WiFi is wireless internet. But: the internet is the what and WiFi is the how. In other words, WiFi is the technology behind it. A slow internet connection is up to the provider itself. You can check the speed of this via a (but then your PC must be connected to the home network via a network cable). Once you have a wireless network, it is useful to check the distance to your modem every now and then. Move the router or Wi-Fi modem higher so that the radio rays are less obstructed, or stand it upright and rotate the antennas in a different direction. It is important that your router is in a central location (walls, doors and furniture sometimes work against you). Sometimes you have to pull the cables through for this – so first check with your provider whether this is also possible with your WiFi modem.

Have you looked at access points yet?

Otherwise you have the option to look at a separate router or an 'access point'. This is an access point for your home network and can be installed anywhere in the house. This is especially useful if you find yourself zooming super fast in the kitchen, but dealing with a stuttering connection in the living room. All wireless devices such as computers and telephones are in contact with each other and the Internet through such an access point. Normally you will find this function in your router, but it can also be a separate device. Whether you do this wired or unwired, installing separate access points ensures that the internet signal is reached in all areas of your house. You can now record your Teams calls from bed.

Use your socket!

Power adapters are also a great alternative for a limited Wi-Fi range. And also a relatively cheap solution: from 50 euros you have a simple model. Power adapters use the power grid as a computer network and are very simple to install. Are you at home with an entire family that needs to be able to account for (or entertain) itself digitally? Or do you not only want to connect your desktop computer but also your telephone or tablet to this network? Then choose a power adapter with an integrated WiFi transmitter so that you have a properly working internet connection.

Keep your devices up to date!

Finally, it is always good to check your devices. Is your PC itself up-to date? If you're dealing with a slow computer or laptop, your browser won't refresh quickly either. Windows 10 needs more than 4 GB at all times to function properly – and above all at a decent pace. With Apple products it is important to always have the latest iOS updates installed. Other tips: use ad blockers, make sure you only have one virus scanner or firewall installed on your device at a time and don't load multiple programs automatically when your PC starts up (such as Spotify, old software you no longer use or programs from Adobe Creative cloud).
